8 symptoms that indicate when to go to the psychologist

Dr. David DiesNovember 4, 2022November 6, 2022

In certain situations, finding psychological assistance is the best decision.

In most cases, people who seek the professional help of psychologists do so for very specific reasons : low mood, lack of motivation to carry out a project, problems regulating impulses, lack of social skills…

Now… what are the symptoms that indicate when to go to the psychologist in the vast majority of contexts and cases? In this article we will see the most important ones.

Common symptoms that indicate when to go to the psychologist

This is a compilation of symptoms that, at a minimum, should make you consider going to a psychologist to try to eliminate or mitigate its harmful effects.

1. Being sleepy almost every morning for a couple of weeks

One of the clearest symptoms that there is a sleep problem is feeling a clear sense of sleep for practically the first three or four hours after waking up.

The effects of lack of sleep go beyond discomfort or simple discomfort : they wear down physical and mental health, although with psychotherapy and some supplements (melatonin) this phenomenon disappears relatively quickly.

2. Fantasizing about committing suicide on a regular basis

Suicidal thoughts, understood as the fact of considering or finding a certain relief by imagining one’s own suicide, are a reflection that something is not right . They are one of the main symptoms of depression and other psychological disorders related to mood in general, such as Borderline Personality Disorder or Bipolar Disorder.

3. Having strong anxiety at work

Anxiety and stress in the work context are relatively common, since where there are responsibilities and goals to achieve in a limited time and with finite resources, there are reasons to be activated and alert. Unfortunately, it is also very common for this anxiety to be excessive, to overwhelm the person.

This is what occurs, for example, in burnout syndrome or in many other alterations linked to anxiety suffered by workers under pressure , regardless of whether they are part of companies or if they are self-employed.

The visit to the psychologist can help both to manage this tension and to find better contexts in which to work. Not all solutions come from individual changes; many times, we have to modify the environment to which we expose ourselves.

4. Have constant arguments

Discussions in the sphere of the couple and the family in general are also one of the most common reasons for consultation in psychotherapy centers . Through couples therapy and family therapy, psychologists help us both to better manage emotions and to communicate better and adopt relational strategies that are less prone to unnecessary confrontation and hostility based on the fight of egos.

5. Need guidance and motivation in sport

Sports Psychology is one of the branches of psychological intervention that is often overlooked, but we must not forget that a large part of the success of athletes and the performance that they can offer at their best depend on psychological variables, such as the ability to self-motivate or stress management.

The psychology centers that have experts in this field can help the trajectory of many athletes reach their maximum potential, not just basing everything on strength and muscular endurance.

6. Present cognitive wear

There is a wide variety of alterations that lead to permanent or temporary loss of cognitive abilities . For example, dementia or drug use.

In psychotherapy, people who have this kind of needs are helped to rehabilitate, making them adopt habits of behavior and thought that help to slow down or stop the manifestation of these symptoms in their tracks.

7. Autolesionaries

Like suicidal ideation, the tendency to self-harm is a sure sign that psychological help is needed .

Although those who do it may come to consider it a relatively normal custom and according to their feelings and emotional state (which in the vast majority of cases is characterized by sadness, anxiety or hopelessness) these actions are the beginning of a slope slippery that feeds more and more the progress of a severe disorder that can end in suicide or in injuries too serious not to leave sequels.

8. Learning difficulties

This is a symptom that is usually noticed especially in children and adolescents . Not in all cases it has to be due to a disorder, but in any case psychotherapeutic help will be useful to evaluate what is happening and do everything possible so that the youngest get the most out of this educational stage.

The opposite could mean falling into school failure, which has consequences that can cause problems throughout life.

Thus, psychologists contribute to helping both young people who present disorders such as dyscalculia, dyslexia or ADHD, as well as those who simply cannot dedicate efforts to study because they are victims of bullying or experience the throes of a traumatic experience.

To the classic question “what do you do?” I always answer “basically I am a psychologist”. In fact, my academic training has revolved around the psychology of development, education and community, a field of study influenced my volunteer activities, as well as my first work experiences in personal services.
