Lipstick is one of the best-known beauty products in the world, as it is an ideal complement to improve the appearance of our lips. Let’s see how they are classified based on their format and the texture they provide.
Lipstick is a frequent make-up product used to get more color or even increase volume or change the shape of the lips . The ingredients that are mainly used to make lipsticks are: pigment, wax, titanium dioxide, oils and emollient agents. Thus, depending on the proportion of each component, we will obtain different types of lipstick with different characteristics.
For example, the most pigmented ones will achieve a more lasting effect, although they tend to mark more imperfections, such as cracks. On the other hand, the creamy ones, with more oils, will be easier to apply and more moisturizing but will last less. In this article we mention some of the most frequently used types of lipstick and others that are newly created or not so common. We show you two classifications, one takes into account the format of the lipstick and the other the texture.

What are lipsticks and how are they classified?
Lipstick is a makeup product that makes our lips stand out, giving our face more color even if we don’t do anything else. This product plays with different textures, colors, brightness or fixation, adapting to consumer preferences and what result we are looking for on each occasion.
Such is the effect that lipstick can create that, depending on its characteristics or how we use it, that is, how we paint ourselves, it can change the appearance of our lips and make it seem that they are of a different size or shape . As a buyer, you will surely be surprised by all the different types of lipsticks that exist, even giving you the possibility of being able to combine them, use more than one, to look for a different color, shine or depth.
If you are interested in knowing what types of lipsticks are on the market and what their main characteristics are, here is a selection of the most common ones, which you can find more frequently in stores.
1. Types of lipstick according to the format
Lipsticks can be classified according to the format they are presented in, in other words, if we find them in the form of a bar, liquid, pencil or cream. Thus, each one will show different characteristics, varying, for example, the ease of transport, the mode of application or the precision of the stroke.
1.1. stick lipstick
The stick lipstick is the most classic type , one of the most used and therefore it is usually chosen as the first option when we start to put on makeup. Its tube format is covered with a plastic protector and allows us to take it anywhere.
The drawback of this type of labile is its short duration, which needs to be touched up frequently so that it continues to show a good appearance, even so the ease of transporting it with us in the bag makes this problem less important. Also, this kind of lipstick allows different finishes such as matte, creamy texture or gloss, which we will see later.
1.2. liquid lipstick
This type of lipstick, unlike the stick format, is applied using a brush , thus providing greater ease of application since we can spread it better.
Now, just like the previous lipstick, this one can also show different finishes, it can be creamier or more matte in texture. This last case allows a long duration since it is the lipstick model with more pigment, thus making it not go away despite rubbing.
1.3. cream lipstick
Cream lipsticks are usually presented in a case , that is, unlike the lipstick that, as we already mentioned, is protected with an elongated wrapper, this time the protection mode will consist of a more or less large box similar to those used for makeup. of eyes.
The texture is usually creamier than the stick type and with less pigment. It may have the drawback of being less comfortable to transport but at the same time it allows you to carry more than one color in the same case.
1.4. pencil lipstick
Pencil lipstick, as with the previous type, is also not often used. Its characteristics are similar to the lip stick but allow for more precision , making finer lines to contour the lip, that is, the use is also similar to the pencil liner, but unlike the latter, the lipstick format is creamier, being able to use it as a filler.
2. Types of lipstick according to texture
In this section we will classify lipsticks according to the texture or appearance they provide. There are different variables that influence the finish of the lipstick, making them more or less dry or have a more intense or lighter color. Lipstick is mainly made up of a pigment, which gives it its colour; titanium dioxide, which is linked to coverage; oils, which hydrate and give creaminess; wax, provides consistency to the lipstick; and emollient agent, which has the function of protecting the lips.
In this way, depending on the amount used of each type of ingredient, different types of lipsticks will be achieved. We must know that the darker and more pigmented lipsticks are normally longer lasting but can dry out the skin more , on the other hand, the creamier ones, with a greater amount of oil, allow greater hydration but are less permanent. Likewise, these different textures can be found in the different formats mentioned above. For example, liquid lipstick may have a more matte or creamier texture depending on the proportion of its components.
2.1. matte lipstick
The matte type lipstick provides a high pigmentation that makes the color stay longer , being more resistant. But as a negative point, it should be noted that its texture is drier, making it difficult to apply and making the cracks in the lips look more.
For this reason it is recommended to exfoliate the lip well before applying this lipstick, to avoid any dead skin and achieve a smoother surface and moisturize them well to counteract dryness. Similarly, we can apply moisturizing balm on top of the matte bar to achieve a creamier texture.
2.2. Creamy Texture Lipstick
The creamy texture lipstick allows to provide a certain hydration to the lip , thanks to its high proportion of oils, thus also facilitating its application. On the other hand, as it is also made up of wax, it helps to give it more color and to achieve a longer duration, it is considered that the duration of this kind of lipstick is medium. As we have already said, the more creaminess of a labile, the less permanent it will be.
Note that the creamy texture can make it difficult to use when the weather is hotter since it tends to melt is a factor to take into account, it can help you keep the lipstick cold.
23. Glossy finish lipstick
Gloss finish lipsticks provide a texture similar to cream but even more brilliant. It is usually the least pigmented type of lipstick , being applied in a simple way but with less duration compared to the others, it is considered to have a medium-low permanence. Its greater hydration and shine makes it perfect for dry lips and if we want to give the feeling of more volume, bigger lips.
2.4. Lipstick
Lip balms are the ones that provide us with the most hydration, for this reason it is not only used for aesthetic purposes but also to keep our lips healthy and hydrated. It is recommended to use them daily and before applying any other lipstick to prepare the skin. In the same way that happens with other types of lipstick, it can have more or less color, even be matte but with the characteristics of the balm, that is, more coverage if it is more pigmented but also more moisturizing.
2.5. lip tints
The tint-type lipstick offers a very natural look, achieving an intermediate appearance between a matte and a glossy finish. Its application is similar to the liquid format but it lasts longer, requiring few or no touch-ups during the day and generates less heaviness on the lips, it is less dense.
Another positive aspect is that it does not dry out the skin , producing fewer cracks, even so it is always good to hydrate before applying any type of lipstick. Finally, mention that its natural finish also allows us to use it in other areas of the face, such as coloring the cheeks or the nose.
2.6. Powder Lipstick
This type of lipstick is applied directly in powder form or mixed with a creamier texture to make it easier to apply. The finish that is achieved is similar to matte with an appearance similar to velvet. The drawback is its low resistance and duration.
2.7. volumizing lipstick
The objective of this type of lipsticks, as its name indicates, is to temporarily achieve greater volume of the lip . For this purpose, it is labile, which may contain ingredients such as caffeine or mint, which cause a slight irritation in the lips and an increase in blood circulation in them.
After a few minutes we will see how the size of our lips has increased, achieving a natural appearance. You can choose to leave this product on for a shiny look or remove it and apply another lipstick.
